Smuggling Out Jesus: Reflections on Militarism, Pacifism, and Justice

Passage: Philippians 2:1–13; Isaiah 2:2–4

Guest speaker Austin Kocher tells part of his story about the ways in which the Jesus of the oppressed was smuggled out to him, shaping his transformation from a member of the military to a peacemaker seeking justice. This Jesus sides with the poor and the marginalized while opposing the oppressive imperial forces of the military, nationalism, and nationalistic Christianity. He challenges us as the church to continue holding up the Jesus who resists the powers of empire, who welcomes immigrants and refugees, and who offers sanctuary in a world where an imperial, warlike Jesus has permeated the culture.
